I went to New York!

Hi guys! Today's post is extra special (and extra long... sorry!) because you will get to see what I've been getting up to... Only visiting NEW YORK CITY!

Okay, calm down...

As I was saying, recently I went with 40 other people from my school to the Big Apple. The trip had been a year in the planning and I actually can't believe how quickly the time went leading up to the whole event (as well as how quickly the actual week went past... that's not fair!). On Monday morning we all got on the coach  at 4am (ugh...) and headed to London Heathrow Airport.

After a 7 and a half hour-flight (and a rather rough landing) we landed in JFK Airport and once we got through security, we boarded the coach that would take us to our hotel. When we arrived and checked into our rooms we were fairly disappointed, but were reassured somewhat by the fact that we would spend minimal time in these rooms as we would always be out doing something.

After a couple of hours we went out to dinner at a nearby Chinese restaurant, which was pretty damn good if I do say so myself! Then we headed back out onto the streets and made our way to the Empire State Building, and as it was St Patrick's Day (and boy do the Americans love St Patrick's Day) the top was all lit up green! We also got the chance to go up to the viewing platform on the 86th (yes, really) floor, where the view of the city was spectacular.

The last two photos are probably my favourite because you can really see the beauty of New York when it's all lit up!

One of the weirdest things that I noticed while being up so high was that all the buildings seemed to block out the noise of the traffic on the ground, so it was almost silent up on the viewing platform. I guess this was a really good thing as it created a very peaceful atmosphere in which to view the beautiful city below.

Tuesday morning we were up bright and early (i.e. up, washed dressed etc.) by 7:30am, and we headed to a cute little café where we had breakfast every morning.

That morning I chose to have pancakes with scrambled eggs. This is before I drizzled maple syrup over them (which tasted amazing!):

Then we went to Grand Central Station (I couldn't help but think of the scene from Madagascar when we went in there haha), where we caught the subway to Bowling Green and got on a ferry to take us to Staten Island and... the Statue of Liberty! It's actually considerably smaller in real life, but it was a magnificent specimen nonetheless and we had a great view of the New York skyline.

Interesting little anecdote for you: not long after we'd walked into the station, a man randomly came up to some of us and said "What do cows do at the weekend?" After some very confused looks amongst our little group we turned back to him and he said "They go to the mooooovies!" We all groaned, but I guess it's nice to have some bubbly people like him in a world that is becoming increasingly negative!

 I am wearing:
Coat - Asda
Snood (just seen) - Primark
Jeans - New Look
Gloves - Asda
Bag - Courtesy of my mum!

We also had a brief exploration of the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, which taught me a few things about the history of America's people and how they lived.

(I didn't want to post too many photos of what was in the museum in case you guys got bored!)

When we got back on the ferry to go back to mainland Manhattan, I paid a visit to the little gift shop on board and bought a Statue of Liberty duck! How cute is that?

Once we were back on the mainland we walked to the financial district of New York - Wall Street. On the way there we saw these memorials to honour those who lost their lives in the devastating events of 9/11.

As we walked further we saw the skyscrapers that had been built to form the new World Trade Center, and then, after giving a donation, we visited the 9/11 memorial.

This church was the only building in the area that wasn't even slightly damaged by the falling Twin Towers - perhaps those affected believed it was a sign that religion would always be there to help people through times of hardship.

When we got into the memorial site it became clear that it was a place for quiet reflection and there was a very peaceful atmosphere. It felt very surreal to actually be at the same site that experienced so much devastation not so long ago, and reading a few of the hundreds, if not thousands of names listed around the edge of each of the pools really brought home how many innocent people lost their lives. It's certainly a part of the trip that I know I'll never forget.

On our way out of the site we got talking to some of the police officers who were on duty, and they were really very lovely... and funny - they had us in stitches on more than one occasion! Once we'd finished there, we headed back to the subway to travel to Times Square... all I could say was "Wow!"

Another little anecdote - while we were on the subway we stopped at a station and these four men got onto the train. They seemed fairly ordinary, until one of them started pretending that the pole in the middle of the empty space by the doors was a double bass (if you're not sure what that is, Google it - it looks like a giant violin) and we were then treated to an acapella performance of "Stand By Me". We thought they were great and joined in (we also tipped them at the end)!

For dinner we went to the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, a restaurant themed around the film Forrest Gump. The staff were so nice and bubbly, despite being rushed off their feet, so I definitely recommend it if you ever get the chance to go there. I had the Southern charmed fried shrimp with fries, which was amazing! For dessert we had vanilla ice cream with cream on the top, served in the smallest bowl I think I have ever seen!

On Wednesday at the little café I knew I had to have an authentic New York bagel... and they didn't hold back on the cream cheese! In all seriousness it was delicious and set me up for the day nicely.

After breakfast we headed to Central Park... and yes, it really is as big as it looks on TV! Apparently it's 864 acres - that's pretty big!

 I am wearing:
Coat, snood, bag and jeans - same as before
Converse - Schuh

I also decided to treat myself to a horse and carriage ride around the park with a friend. We even managed to haggle the price down to $35 instead of $50! The ride was very pleasant, if slightly cold, and our driver was lovely, giving us some information about the history of the park. Our horse was called Harry and he was lovely too (you can see him in the picture above)!

Shortly after I exited the park I saw this and had to take a photo... Your stereotypical New York transport haha!

After that, we went into Bloomingdales, although unfortunately I didn't buy anything because we had a fairly short time in there. On our way back we also visited the Cake Boss Café - I will point out now that I've never seen the show, nor have I heard of Buddy, but I can tell you that we didn't get to meet him. The cakes looked amazing though!

Once we'd finished, we went back to the hotel to get ready for dinner at Planet Hollywood. When we got there we saw the handprints of some of the celebrities that had been there. Here's Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sean Connery's prints:

On our way up the stairs to the eating area, I spotted the dress worn by Morticia Addams in the Addams Family film. I'd love to wear it!

When we were sat at our tables I had a look around - I didn't expect it to be so big! The atmosphere was lovely though, and again I'd recommend it if you get the chance to go! I ordered a bowl of pasta and after that the waiters came round with plates of giant - and I mean giant - cookies, mmm!

For breakfast on Thursday morning I thought I'd go for something a little different: cinnamon toast. It was a lot tastier than I was expecting, although I did start to choke after accidentally inhaling some of the icing sugar, much to my friends' amusement (ahem...)

After breakfast it was back to the hotel to pack and check out. Then we got on the subway to Brooklyn Bridge (you can just see it through the trees in the picture below), where we walked to Chinatown and Little Italy.

You can just about see them in the picture above, but as we were walking past we saw a couple coming out of the church after getting married. Aww!

To be totally honest I was a little disappointed with both Chinatown and Little Italy. I feel like they would probably come alive at night with all the lights and the atmosphere would probably be a lot better. Still, it was an experience to tick off the 'to-do' list I suppose!

Then we walked to the Rockefeller, where we had the opportunity to do some last-minute shopping or go ice-skating. I didn't trust myself on the ice, so me and a couple of my friends went along 5th Avenue and bought a few bits.

I kid you not, this pizza slice was bigger than my whole hand! It was yummy though...

Once we'd all met back outside the ice rink we had some group photos done, including a group 'selfie' that would put Ellen DeGeneres and her Oscars buddies to shame. I'm at the back in both photos, but that's life I guess!

Then it was back to the hotel to pick up our luggage (we'd put it into storage while we were out) and onto the coach to Newark Airport so that we could fly back home. It was an overnight flight but unfortunately I had trouble sleeping whilst on the plane so I stayed awake for most of the journey.

Once we'd got through security at Heathrow we went to collect our luggage but then had to wait because one of the girls left her passport on the plane. However, our delay did mean that we got to meet Russell Brand! He's lovely in person, and was more than happy to chat with us and have photos taken for about 20 minutes, and his security team were very relaxed which was nice. I had a couple of photos taken but they weren't that great. Here's the better one of the two (i.e. I was actually looking at the camera haha):

Then it was back on another coach to take us home! I'm sorry this took me so long to post but I had a load of schoolwork to catch up on so I've had to put it back a bit. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in New York and would go again in a heartbeat. It's definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and if you ever get the chance to go, do it!

If you've been to New York, let me know what you thought of your stay as I love hearing other people's opinions!

Lots of love,

Fliss xx

Trip to London & Sensing Spaces

Hello everyone! This is my first blog post of 2014 and it's March already?! I'm soooo sorry I haven't posted but I've been lacking inspiration and sixth form's kept me pretty busy!

A quick life update for you (if you're interested... if not, just skip this bit and read the main part of the post hehe) - since the beginning of 2014 I have received conditional offers from two universities, which is great! On the other hand, my boyfriend and I broke up in January which was quite upsetting (I'm not going to go into details) but the relationship wasn't very long and I quickly moved on and embraced being single once again. So yeah, that happened...

Anyway, I've finally sat down and put something together for you, hope you enjoy!

Last weekend it was my mum's birthday (again, sorry about the bad timing but my head's been all over the place!) and after browsing the internet she decided she wanted to go to London and visit the Royal Academy of Arts for their Sensing Spaces exhibition. I'm not normally a very arty type of person but this exhibition is quite different - it is all about architecture and one part involves putting very brightly coloured straws into a white tunnel made with layers of what looks like honeycomb. Needless to say our inner children were drawn straight out when looking at this part of the display!

Apparently there are 500,000 straws available to put into the framework every day. Wow...

The intense concentration on my face...

Not quite sure how people got their straws up so high... although I did see someone being given a leg-up by her friends...

I am wearing:
Coat - Primark
Blazer - Primark
Striped top - Tesco
Leggings - New Look
Shoes - Tesco
Bag - Primark
Lips - Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in 220 'Showy Flamboyante'

In the maze

After the exhibition, we decided to have a little wander around Regent Street. We'd already walked down Bond Street and looked in the windows of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana... We quickly got very intimidated by the luxuriousness oozing from every shop window (not to mention the Aston Martin that drove past us as we walked and parked between a Ferrari and a Porsche) and decided we'd better leave...
Look at these gorgeous macaroons!

This reminded me of my cousin Caroline's wedding cake... I may have only been 9 that day but it was a delicious cake!

Next we wandered down to Piccadilly Circus, where we popped into Boots and I finally found the much talked-about Essie nail polish in Mint Candy Apple (although I should really credit my mum because she was the one who pointed it out to me in the first place)! Needless to say I brought home my very own bottle of it...

After that we kept walking and eventually had dinner at a little Italian restaurant off Leicester Square, before calling it a day and catching the train home.

All in all it was a really enjoyable day and I'm glad the seemingly never-ending bad weather held off for my mum's special day.

What have you been up to recently?

Lots of love,

Fliss xx

What I Got for Christmas!

Hi everyone!

At the moment I think I'll only be able to post once a month because things are getting pretty hectic with school work and stuff, and as it's December, there was only one theme to write about... Christmas!

This year's almost at an end, so I thought the last post I could upload for 2013 would be a little look at what I got for Christmas. Hope you enjoy!

The two biggest presents I got this year were a new suitcase and a new camera (told you there would be a new one on the way!) I'd asked for the suitcase for when I go to New York (there will be an extra big post on that when I come back, but give me time to recover from jet lag!) as the one I currently have is no longer being used and is far too small, and likewise I had asked for a new camera for the trip so I could take better pictures and create clearer memories to look back on.

I also got a few toiletries and beauty products from friends and family (I am aware that the purple nail varnish is in two photos, but I thought I'd show one where you can see it better). My nearest and dearest seem to know me well!

Last but not least is a rather cute mini hot water bottle which I got from my boyfriend (along with some cute reindeer slipper socks, which I forgot to put in the photo... sorry!). I've already used it once and I love it!

So there you have it, a sneak peek at what I opened on Christmas Day! I'd love to see what you guys got, so feel free to leave links in the comments to your present posts!

Finally, have a very Happy New Year and I hope 2014 brings you all that you wish for!

Lots of love,

Fliss xx

My First Beauty Post! Products I'm Loving Right Now

Hi guys!

Apologies for not posting for quite some time, my school work's been crazy at the moment!

Anyway, today I thought I'd do my first beauty post. I will say now I'm no beauty expert or anything, I'm merely reviewing products that I like and sharing it with you guys. Who knows, it may help you greatly!

I'd also like to point out that these photos were taken with my iPod as my camera is rubbish and wouldn't take very clear photos (I apologise if some of these are really bad as well!) . At some point I will try and get a decent camera for this blog as I suspect there will be lots of pictures to be used!

I'm going to try to be as organised as possible, so I'll probably organise them into things like skincare, makeup, nails etc. I'll also try and stick to budget-friendly products so that if you do want to go and get them they won't cost you an arm and a leg, but for more great cheap and cheerful wonders (not just beauty, but fashion too!) go and visit Meg's Budget Boutique!

Okay, so here we go!

Skincare

My first skincare product is the Simple Hydrating Light Moisturiser, £3.79 at Superdrug. As someone with mostly dry skin, I'm always on the lookout for products that will nourish my skin, without feeling too greasy or rich, and since I watched one of Tanya Burr's videos about teenage skin, featuring this product, I thought I'd buy it and I've discovered that it is perfect - my skin feels nicely moisturised, it sinks into the skin quickly and isn't overly scented. And what's more, I literally only need to use a pea-sized blob to cover my whole face (although I leave my forehead till last because that's the oiliest part of my face and needs very little product), so it lasts a long time... I bought this at the beginning of August and I'm only about halfway through the bottle! Overall, I think it's great value for money and you should definitely check it out, although I wouldn't recommend it to those with oily skin (I think you'll be better off with an oil-balancing one, which Simple also do).

Next on the list is the Nivea In-Shower Body Moisturiser, £3.55, also at Superdrug. My mum first bought one of these bottles for normal skin and said it was really nice, so one day when I was in the shower I used a little bit of it (sorry Mum!) and was impressed with the results. Not long afterwards my mum got me the one for dry skin and I've used it nearly every day (I can afford to go a couple of days without moisturising with this product, which is an added bonus!). I use it mostly on my legs, which get driest the quickest, and it only takes an extra minute or so in the shower as opposed to at least 5 minutes after showering (plus the waiting around for it to sink in and not feel sticky or greasy), which when I'm in a hurry to get ready is a godsend! It's the perfect lazy girl moisturiser, and having started using this near the beginning of September and have just run out, I would say that's good value for money, don't you?

Makeup

First up is the Limited Edition Vaseline Paint the Town Red Lip Tint (that's quite a mouthful, isn't it? Haha), £3.49 at Superdrug. I actually saw this in Tesco and was intrigued by it, so I bought it and I am surprised! It is quite a dark red when you see it in the tin but don't let that put you off... Once you've applied it it comes out more like a rosy pinky red, if that makes sense? I'll put a picture so you can see for yourself haha. I always find that I like to wear something that will give my lips a hint of colour, just to define them a little bit, but won't necessarily clash with whatever eye makeup I'm wearing, and this is perfect for those of you who are easing yourself into wearing makeup or for you girls who want to wear colour on your lips without being told off at school. It's nice and cheap, it nourishes your lips and is lightly pigmented... What more could you want? An all-round great product!

Left to right: Vaseline Paint the Town Lip Tint, Barry M Lip Liner and Rimmel Kate Moss Matte Lipstick

The next two products kind of go hand in hand. First is the Barry M Lip Liner in Red (Number 3). Occasionally I will wear this on its own as it's a nice bold shade, and it's a nice soft pencil which doesn't drag across my lips when applying it (especially if you put a bit of lip balm on beforehand, which I always do to stop my lips drying out). Plus, if you don't get on with it (because I know everybody is different), at just £2.99 it's not a massive waste of money. The second product is the much talked-about Rimmel Kate Moss Matte Lipstick in 107. I actually saw this in Tesco a couple of months back for £5.50 and bought it out of pure curiosity, and I loved it! Since then, Meg and Zoe (Zoella) and even the almighty Tanya Burr, who has featured it in one of her videos, and other beauty bloggers have been raving about it. I usually apply the Barry M lip liner first and the lipstick second as I find it gives the lipstick more staying power (a tip I picked up from the lovely Pixiwoo ladies... check out all these names I'm dropping haha!) Anyway, I love the slightly vampy edge that this lipstick has, but it's also suitable to wear during the day, which I have done a lot more lately. Just make sure you have it with you to top up during the day if you're going to be eating or drinking!

Next on the list is the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer. I first heard about this on one of Meg's videos and then Zoella herself was raving about it so I thought I'd give it a go. And wow, were they right! This is my second tube and it is amazing at covering spots and blemishes, especially if you're like me and have persistent dark circles under your eyes! The only downside is that the writing on the packaging does wear off after a while (as you can probably see in the photo), but at just £3.99 from Superdrug, it's hardly significant is it?
Next up is the Rimmel Extra Wow Lash mascara. This was actually part of a Christmas present from my friend Holly, but after a bit of digging I've found it is £5.49 from Superdrug, and I've literally only just got round to using it as I've previously been using other mascaras that were either presents or, in one case, one that I'd found when going through some bags (I guess it pays to check stuff before you throw it out!). Anyway, I was a bit sceptical about this but in all honesty I'm rather impressed. My lashes are short and fairly curly so anything that promises length is worth trying and I found that although my eyelashes weren't super long after applying several coats, it really does open up your eyes and doesn't feel heavy, even after I applied quite a few coats (one or two never really does it for me!). All in all I think it's a very good product!

Nails

Left: Blood Orange. Right: Lychee

I couldn't really do this sort of post without mentioning the Barry M nail varnishes, could I? They are great value for money at just £3.99 each and come in so many gorgeous shades, and I'm loving the Gelly range at the moment! The colour that I'm wearing which you can see in some of the photos is called Blood Orange and is an amazing bright red, perhaps not for those who prefer more muted shades but a lovely colour nonetheless haha! Another staple is Lychee, which is a lovely beige/nude shade and is perfect for those who want to put something on their nails but don't want something too outgoing.

Also on the list is the Maybelline Super Stay nail polish in Midnight Red. I've recently been looking for a nice dark red colour to put on my nails as we approach winter and I think that this one definitely nails the berry trend for this season (see what I did there?). At £4.09 I think it's a reasonable price and it promises 7-day wear with no chips (I'm not sure I can vouch for that, then again as I'm still at college/sixth form my hands may go through more than other people's), and the finish looks very much professional, almost as if I've invested in a gel manicure, which is always nice!

Brushes

First up are the Real Techniques brushes. Created by Sam from Pixiwoo, I first heard about the Stippling Brush on one of Meg's videos and thought I'd do some more digging. My first purchase was the Expert Face Brush, which at £8.99 from Boots may seem extravagant for a foundation brush but it does an amazing job and I love it! I use it to apply my foundation and also to blend my concealer in, particularly around my eyes. I also purchased the Starter Set for £21.99, also from Boots. Again, this may seem pricey for eye makeup brushes but it is an investment worth making, and they are great for when I'm doing a show and need a good smokey eye. When I'm not doing that, though, I sometimes use the Deluxe Crease Brush from the set to blend my concealer. All of these brushes are so soft and really help you achieve professional results.

Left: Asda blush/bronzer brush. Right: Asda powder brush

My other favourite brushes are my blush/bronzer brush and my powder brush which came as part of a kit from Asda, a Christmas present from my sister a few years ago (so unfortunately I can't tell you how much it was). They are unbelievably soft and are so nice to apply product with, so I just thought I'd throw them in!

Hope you guys enjoyed this post, I hope I've been helpful to you guys even though I'm certainly no expert when it comes to this sort of thing!

What are your favourite products right now? Let me know in the comments!

Lots of love,

Fliss xx
